Dear friend,
Housing stability is not just a basic necessity but the bedrock of a fulfilling life. It provides security, comfort, and peace and is fundamental to mental and physical health, faith, and well-being. Yet, for many in our community, this stability is a luxury they cannot afford. This report aims to shed light on the critical issue of affordable housing and the vital role that Good Samaritan plays in addressing it.
Good Samaritan’s impact on Ottawa County residents is profound. For 55 years, we have been instrumental in helping individuals and families move beyond surviving to become thriving members of this community. This year, however, we have faced unprecedented challenges, including a staggering 97% increase in homelessness in Ottawa County. This alarming rise highlights the critical need for support and intervention to ensure our neighbors have access to safe and stable housing.
One of the ways we are addressing these challenges is through the reintroduction of our Circles program, a proven initiative that helps families build supportive networks, develop financial stability, and ultimately break the cycle of poverty. We are excited about the program’s potential and are actively working to expand it into other locations, allowing us to reach even more families in need.
The struggle for affordable housing has been further compounded by the suspension of Housing Choice Vouchers in earl fall, leaving many low-income families unable to access assistance they need. This has placed countless households at increased risk of losing their housing, further deepening the crisis.
Despite the challenges, the dedicated team at Good Samaritan is unwavering in their commitment to finding solutions for our clients. By assisting households in securing and maintaining affordable housing, we help residents maintain family unity and safety. The growing demand for our services, as reflected in the numbers in this year’s report, underscores the urgency of our mission. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported our efforts, empowering us to continue making a transformative impact in the lives of Ottawa County residents. Together, we are building hope, stability, and a stronger community.
Sincerely,
Brian J. De Vos

Ending Poverty
Nearly 1 in 3 Ottawa County households are experiencing poverty or are employed—many working multiple jobs—but struggle to make ends meet.
As part of its poverty-ending efforts, Good Samaritan has re-launced Circles Ottawa County this past fall, 2024. Circles is a nationwide evidence-based program and innovative way of connecting people across socioeconomic lines to move individuals and families out of poverty.
Our poverty-ending program is uniquely designed to reduce poverty by helping low-income individuals expand their social capital while bringing the community together in solidarity to reduce the barriers that keep people in poverty. Circles is made up of people who want to make a change in their own life and the lives around them.
